Ye-Ye Swing Music A-Go-Go

Shaki'n All 2014

Wax & Boogie

Over the years, Wax & Boogie have been gaining recognition and have become one of the best bands of the blues, rhythm and blues and boogie-woogie scene.

Ster Wax and David Giorcelli have been able to capture the true spirit of African-American traditional music in an exceptional way and turned it into their own means of expression. They master the language of black music in a rich and varied way. Ster and David surf easily and confidently on the different waves of the genre.

Shuffles, boogie-woogie, rock’n’roll, swing or jumps are part of their usual repertoire, not to mention intense and hot “slow downs”. That’s where we can appreciate the power and the feeling thatboth David on piano and Ster on vocals, as well as the rest of musicians who play with them, have brought to this style of blues that was developed by black people in the ‘South Side’ of Chicago a few decades ago.

Besides what has been mentioned, Kansas City, Texas blues and 50s R&B are present in all the work of the couple, with the constant influence of Pete Johnson, Albert Ammons, Otis Spann, Esther Phillips, Big Maybelle, Big Joe Turner, Johnny Otis, Amos Milburn and Wynona Carr, among many other great names of the forties and fifties.

Ster Wax – Vocalist
David Giorcelli – Pianist
Oriol Fontanals – Double Bassist
Reginald Vilardell – Drummer

Inspired by Django Reinhardt’s music, Scaramouche play Jazz Manouche in a varied and personal way, always with the characteristic simplicity and joy of the gipsy style that will make you unable to stop moving your feet!

Elisenda Julià – Vocalist
Jon Unanua – Double Bassist
Jacob Marcé – Guitarist
Diego Mena – Guitarist

Gina Portillo

She draws and dances or dances and draws (‘cause she’s more on the dance floor than in her studio :P).

I was born in Barcelona in 1983. I studied illustration in Llotja School of Art and Design and then a did a Specialisation Course in Illustration for Children’s Publications in Eina University School of Design and Art. I kept learning and having worksops here and there with illustrators I loved, also working as a freelance and making some exhibitions.
I made some drawings for schoolbooks, for some folk music events, music album covers and plenty of little things and personal projects, and in 2008 I published for the first time a children’s book, yay!
Meanwhile I worked in children education and gave several craft worksops for children and families in libraries. Because of this I started studying education at the University of Barcelona and took some workshops about free and alternative schooling.
Nowadays I work part time as a mixture of administrative/designer (no comments) and as a freelance illustrator.
I love dancing in my free time. I have danced folk many years and started learning swing dances a couple of years ago. Now I am hooked on shag. I love dancing as fast as I can. It’s amazing.

Here is some of her amazing work: Gina Portillo – Drawings
